Naples Tidbits

There was once a time when the Caloosa Indians were the only people that strolled along the seven miles of sandy, white beaches of Naples. Two men named Joe Wiggins and Roger Gordon were the first settlers, and in the late 1860’s, they came to Naples. Two inlets and a river still bear their names.

Between the 1870’s and the 1880’s, newspaper and magazine articles told of the abundant game and fish and the mild climate of the region and considered the area similar to the sunny peninsula of Italy. When promoters of the area described the bay that surpassed the bay in Naples, Italy, the name Naples was born.

A man who owned the Louisville Courier/Journal named Walter Haldeman was the leader of a group of rich people from Kentucky in 1887. They literally bought the whole community of Naples. The Naples along with Mr. Haldeman made on of the first improvements to Naples, which was to construct a 600 foot long into the Gulf of Mexico. Ships could easily dock because of the unusual T shape. This T shape of the pier still remains in spite it being destroyed and restored three times.

Naples rapidly became known as a winter resort. The social life in the community centered on the Naples Hotel, which hosted many different celebrities including Gary Cooper, Hedy Lamarr Greta Garbo, Harvey Firestone, Thomas Edison, and Rose Cleveland. The cost of land increased as the community Naples increased in size. It wasn’t long before a lot on the beachfront sold for $125.

The remote area of downtown Naples started attracting attention in the late 1880’s when the property boom in Florida took off. A group of businessmen from Tallahassee established the Naples Town Improvement Company. In 1886, the location for the community was surveyed and immediately offered to home buyers for only $10 per lot.

Under a group of prominent business leaders from Kentucky The Naples Town Improvement Company was reorganized in 1887. The leader of this effort was a US Senator and general during the Civil War named John Williams. They formed the Naples Company together with newspaperman Walter Haldeman and immediately launched an ambitious program to build the community based on future commerce by seal and by well, as well as tourism.

The new community of Naples was comprised of a seasonal population of approximately 80 people, a hotel, a post office, a general store, as a 600 foot pier. However, the Naples Company collapsed in spite as the result of ever mounting debts and sagging sales in spite of a promising start. Naples remained a private retreat in the wintertime for some wealthy families from Ohio and Kentucky for the next three decades.

A man who had become wealthy advertising streetcars named Barron Collier arrived in the close by Useppa Island in 1911. After falling in love with the island he purchased more than one million acres of the virgin swampland, which included the majority of Naples. MR. Collier was under the belief that the west coast of Florida could benefit from the same boom that the east coast had experienced during the 1920’s. However, he would first have to bring in railroads and roads.

In 1923, the state legislature formed Collier County, which Naples is the county seat of, based on the promise that Mr. Collier made to help create the Tamiami Trail. In order to create the Tamiami Trail, Mr. Collier spent over one million of his own money. In 1926, the Tamiami opened and had the only paved highway that linked the two largest Communities in Florida, which were Miami and Tampa.

As the railroads and roads penetrated into the wilderness of Florida and gradually reached Naples during the late 1920’s, the years of isolation slowly came to an end. The Depot for the Seaboard Air Line Railway currently located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue South and Tenth Street was still only somewhat complete when the first passenger train, known as the Orange Blossom Special arrived in Naples in 1927.

Numerous servicemen were introduced to Naples during WW II in 1943, when the US Army Air Field was activated in order to train pilots for combat flying. Following the war, the airport was returned to the county and the city and, in 1953 was dedicated as the Naples America Airport. Also after the war, much of the groundwork for the impressive development and growth in Naples was laid. The population increased from 390 people in 1930, to nearly 1,200 by 1950. The first bank was opened in Naples in 1950 and in 1956 a hospital was opened.

Before he could see his dream come true, Mr. Collier passed away. However, his dream really did come true. These days, the residents of Naples enjoy unequalled prosperity. Much the same as it did 100 years ago, the unrivaled beach combing, sunbathing, boating, hunting, and sport fishing still attract people.

Naples has become the fastest community in Collier County ever since the 1960’s, as the result of being an appealing destination for seasonal visitors, the economic growth, and steady increase in population. The community’s economic benefits and tourism are surging ahead and are stronger than ever. In the meantime, banking, real estate, and construction have become to primary industries in the community.
