Bonita Springs Tidbits
Archaeological discoveries have determined that people inhabited Bonita Springs as long as approximately 8,000 years ago and for 4,000 years of that period, mound building was well underway. This region was the home of numerous Indian tribes long before 1513, when Ponce de Leon made the first contact with the Calusa Indian tribe after sailing the beaches of Bonita Springs. Centuries of their prosperity are represented by the Native Indian mounds and villages. However, the once mighty Calusa Chiefs were decimated by slave trading and European diseases within a couple of hundred years.
Sometime during the 1870’s Bonita Springs got its start when a camp was pitched in a remote portion of Southwestern Florida by surveyors from the government close to a medicinal spring that the local Indian tribes could heal the ill. This location became known as Survey once the government surveyors had left, and the stream running from the location came to be known as Surveyor’s Creek.
In the following ten years, there were only a meager amount of w homesteaders relocating to the region. However, a man named Braxton Comer purchased 6,000 acres of property around Survey during the late 1880’s the population of the region more than doubled. Mr. Comer imported 50 Negro families from Alabama along with equipment and mules to work on a large plantation that grew coconuts, bananas, and pineapples.
Survey grew from a small group of homesteaders into a community. A public school was constructed complete will log walls and a thatched roof in 1887, and the frame, two story Eagle Hotel was in built in 1910 to cater to visitors and out of town business men, who were attracted to the unspoiled bounty of fishing and hunting in the region.
A man from Tennessee named Ragsdale bought 2,400 acres around Survey in 1912. The region was surveyed by Mr. Ragsdale and his associate, named Daniel Farnsworth, and together they laid out a small community with the names of avenues and streets of potential buyers. In 1915, a minister from Naples held the first non-denominational church service in the community in the school house because there wasn’t any church building. Having determined that the name of Survey didn’t have any sales appeal, the developers changed the name of the community from Survey to Bonita Springs and the name of Surveyor’s Creek was changed to the Imperial River while the name of Indian Spring Branch was changed to the Oak River.
A man named Barron Collier extended his Ft. Myers Southern Railroad in the early 1920’s, to include Bonita Springs, which brought a land boom to the region with the addition of his new Tamiami Trail in 1928. Also, the name Fiddlerville, which was so named because if the millions of tiny fiddler crabs, was changed to Bonita Beach. Bonita Springs was incorporated for a short time during this time period.
Additional visitors arrived in Bonita Springs as the result of some new attractions. Lester and Bill piper displayed native Florida animals, such as bears and panthers at the Everglades Wonder Gardens. They also provided some rare animals to the zoo in Chicago. A man named Harold Crant, from Canada, observed the millions of shells that were just lying and free for the taking. In the brightly colored windows next to the beaches they were knee and Mr. Crant opened the Shell Factory. In the early 1940’s the factory burned to the ground but was later rebuilt in North Fort Myers.
More visitors were enticed to visit Bonita Springs by the roadside attractions that became available sometime later. In 1936, the first primary tourist attraction was opened in the Everglades Reptile Garden. This roadside tourist attraction featured exotic and local and animals and helped Bonita Springs become noticed as a tourist attraction. The Everglades Wonder Garden is one of the only historic resources of its kind in Florida that remains. The Naples/Ft. Myers Greyhound Racing track was also opened in the community.
For decades, Bonita Springs remained a small, quiet community. However, the rush was about to begin as the years passed by. With the advent of the population between the 1980’s and the 1990’s, the new U.S. 42 bypass, a close by major airport, the opening of Interstate 75, and air conditioning there were new golf courses, modern office facilities, and shopping malls being built all over the community.
For the second time, the citizen of the community voted to incorporate Bonita Springs in 1999. These days, the community Bonita Springs is an affluent and attractive region that offers beautiful homes, excellent recreational facilities, fine restaurants, and beautiful beaches.
Additional access to the area was accomplished by the Interstate 75 and US 41 Bypass corridors opening up as the years passed. This brought some outstanding golf courses, modern office facilities, and additional shopping centers into the region. Bonita Springs has become another thriving community is Southwestern Florida township.
